The little trolley button

Buttons, Physics, HoverCanvas, GSAPAdvancedCompressed weight: Demo 13 KBGSAP 28 KBFreeDownload the zip

The Add to cart button of a shop, with a little chrome wire shopping trolley in the round end of the pill, drawn on a canvas every frame: the basket rides on two small springs, and the wheels really turn with the distance rolled. Under the pointer the trolley rolls back a little, as if taken by the handle. At a click a box falls from above into the basket, the springs squash and the basket sways; then the trolley dashes forward through the words, brakes at the end of the pill lifting its rear wheels and rolls back braking, and behind it Added · 1 in cart appears. Each click adds a box of another colour to the heap.

The code

A folder that runs on its own: index.html, style.css, script.js and the libraries from a CDN. The React and Vue tabs hold the same demo as a ready component, which switches its animations off when it leaves the page.

What it does

On a black background a basil green pill 60 pixels tall, with a thread of light along the top. On the right, in ivory Mona Sans, Add to cart and the price €24 in a small pill; in the round left end, where the icon would be, a little shopping trolley seen from the side and a little from above, in chrome wire: two walls of wire (the far one darker), the thicker rolled rim, the handle with its red grip, a wire tray under the basket, two small coil springs between the tray and the basket, and four black wheels with a grey hub and spokes. Every wire is a chrome tube: a dark shadow, the grey body and a thread of light on top. Under the wheels a soft shadow on the pill. On arrival the trolley rolls in from the left and brakes at its place, rocking on its springs. With the mouse over the button the words widen, the fill swells with a bounce and the trolley rolls back five pixels with its wheels turning backwards and its nose lifting a hair, as if a hand had taken the handle. At a click a small terracotta box with a cream label falls from above: it turns a little in the air, drops into the basket, bounces once, the springs squash and the basket sways and leans. Then the trolley sets off: speeding up it rears on its back wheels and the basket stays behind on its springs, and the words vanish as its nose reaches them; at the end of the pill it brakes, tips forward lifting its rear wheels, and rolls back, braking again in front of home. Behind it, as it withdraws, the new words appear: a pale green tick that draws itself, Added · 1 in cart with the number rising in a little jump. Each click adds a box of another colour (Clay, Ink, Sage, Rose, Oat) that lands on the heap, higher and higher, until the last ones peek over the rim; with the basket full a small Clear pill takes the place of Added, and a click sends the full trolley out of the pill and rolls an empty one in from the left. With the keyboard the focus shows a pale green ring, the words widen and the trolley rolls back as under the mouse; Enter or Space add. On a phone the finger on the button takes the handle and the tap adds.

How it works

The trolley on a canvas

The canvas covers the pill and the 64 pixels above it, where the boxes fall from, at the screen's density up to 3. The trolley is drawn in its own units (a little enlarged, 1.12) on every frame where something moves, in this order: the far side's wheels and chassis, the far wall and the floor of the basket, the boxes, the near wall with the rim and the handle, then the near side's springs, tray and wheels. So the boxes sit inside the basket, between the two walls of wire. Each wire is a Path2D stroked three times: dark and wide, grey and narrower, light and thin shifted upwards, and there is a chrome tube lit from above.

The wheels and the tipping chassis

GSAP tweens move the trolley's place; the rest is physics answering. The wheels' angle is the distance rolled over the radius, so they turn exactly as much as the trolley moves, and backwards when it rolls back. Speed and push come every frame from the differences of the place, filtered and capped. The chassis sits on a stiff spring: the push tips it (TILT), and the pivot changes with the direction: speeding up it turns about the rear wheel and lifts its nose, braking about the front one and lifts its rear wheels. The shadow under it narrows and pales when a wheel lifts.

The basket on its springs

The basket has two degrees of freedom, how far it sinks on its springs and how far it leans, each on a damped spring (SPRING swings a second, DAMPING). The trolley's push makes it lag behind and then swing forward; the two coil springs between the tray and the basket are redrawn every frame between their two ends, and really shorten and stretch. The boxes live in the basket's frame, so they sway with it.

The falling boxes

Each box has its place in the heap (five places, lying and standing, one on another) and falls with gravity (GRAVITY) from the top of the canvas, turning a little. When it reaches its place it bounces losing nearly all its speed, and the basket takes a blow in proportion: it sinks on its springs and leans towards the box's side. Then the box settles on its place on a small spring. Each box takes its colour from --box-1 to --box-5 and has a lighter top and a darker side, the same way as the basket's walls.

The words behind the trolley

The words lie under the canvas, but the trolley never covers them: they have a CSS mask with a soft edge (mask-image, a linear gradient) whose start, --cut, the script writes every frame at the trolley's nose. Going forward the words vanish as the nose reaches them; at the end the faces swap unseen, and coming back the new words appear behind the trolley. The pill's width is measured once over every face (at rest with the wide copy, Added with a two-digit number, and Clear), so it never changes.

The states

The button is a real button: aria-disabled while the box falls and the trolley runs, an aria-live region says Adding Linen napkins, Clay, to your cart… and then Added. 1 in cart., and the aria-label says the next click adds another, or empties the cart once it is full. The whole round takes about 2.3 seconds, less than the 2.8 between two clicks of the preview, which so shows every box. When nothing moves the loop stops working and drawing.

Values to change

NameFileDefaultWhat it changes
LABELscript.jsAdd to cartThe words at rest. If they are too long for the room, the type gets smaller.
PRICEscript.js€24The price, in its small pill next to the words.
DONEscript.jsAddedThe word after the tick, once the box is in the basket.
UNITscript.jsin cartWhat follows the number.
CLEARscript.jsClearThe small pill that shows with the basket full: a click sends the full trolley away and brings an empty one.
PRODUCTscript.jsLinen napkinsThe product, for the aria-live region: in a real site it is the one on the page, and the adding has to be wired to your cart.
VARIANTSscript.js['Clay', 'Ink', 'Sage', 'Rose', 'Oat']The variants' names, one per box, in the order they fall; their colours are --box-1 … --box-5.
FULLscript.js5How many boxes the basket takes before Clear shows, from 1 to 5.
RUNscript.js0.6The seconds of the dash forward; the way back takes a quarter longer. Shorter, the trolley rears and brakes harder.
SPRINGscript.js3.2The basket's swings a second on its springs: higher, stiff quick springs; lower, a basket that rocks slowly.
DAMPINGscript.js0.16How hard the springs hold the basket back: 0.05 it rocks a long time, 1 it stops at once.
TILTscript.js1How much the trolley tips on its wheels speeding up and braking, and how far the basket lags: 0 it stays flat.
GRAVITYscript.js2400How fast the boxes fall, in pixels a second squared; higher, harder blows on the springs.

When to use it

For the Add to cart button of an online shop, a homeware, grocery or handmade store, and for quick reorder buttons in shopping apps. The trolley is the symbol everyone knows, here made into an object: whoever adds sees the piece go in and the trolley set off. It has to be wired to the real cart: here the adding is simulated.

On phones

The pill is about 245 pixels wide: at 390 it fits with room to spare, and if the words do not fit the type gets smaller. A finger on the button takes the handle (the trolley rolls back) and the tap adds; the dash runs from one end of the pill to the other as on a computer.

With reduced motion

The trolley stays still at its place: no entrance, no dash, no tipping, the fill does not swell and the words do not widen (under the mouse the fill only lightens a little). At a click the box fades in at its place in the heap and Added · 1 in cart fades in; with the basket full, Clear fades the boxes away.

Pitfalls

  • The trolley running over the words covered them for a moment, and the basket's wire lets them show through. Now the words have a mask with a soft edge that follows the trolley's nose: only what lies to its right shows, and the words change while they are all hidden.
  • Enlarging the drawing, the nose constant served both in pixels (for the mask) and in the drawing's units (for the basket's corner): the basket grew longer. Now the basket's corner is a number of the drawing and the nose is in pixels, already enlarged.
  • With the small Clear pill next to Added · 5 in cart the pill, as wide as the longest face, was half empty at rest. With the basket full Clear takes the place of Added, and the width is measured over every face with a two-digit number.
  • The first box, sage on a cream label, disappeared behind the chrome wire. The boxes are now coloured with a cream label, and the first is terracotta.
  • On the way back the trolley reared fifteen degrees: the push, worked out from the differences of the place, has spikes. Now it is filtered and capped, and the tip stops at 0.12 radians.
