The QR that takes flight

NewZIPPNGFree19 October 2026

Tap the code, the sky opens in a circle from where you touched and every dark module crouches, spreads its wings and takes off in a wave: hundreds of birds wheeling like starlings, in a vortex or in a figure-eight ribbon, dodging your mouse pointer. Tap the sky and they fly home one after another, each to its exact spot, fold their wings and the code to scan is back.

The flat code always scans: it is a standard QR (error correction level M), tested with a phone camera. Before you print a thousand, scan it once.

How to use it

  • Type the address

Put the link to your site, a menu, a profile or just some text in the field and press Build. The code rearranges itself around the new address.

  • Watch it transform

Tap the code: it steps into its style, and you change it with the choices below. Tap it again and it lies flat, ready to scan.

  • Download the animation

The zip is the whole animation with your link and your colours: three files for your site, with the values to change at the top of the code, plus the PNG of the flat code (about 2000 pixels) for print. The zip needs a free account, the PNG alone does not.

How it’s made

  • From square to bird

The module and the bird are the same fourteen-point shape: the corners of the square become the roots of the wings and tail, so the module opens into a bird and the bird folds back into a module. The wings beat, now and then they glide, and the far birds are smaller and paler.

  • The flock

Every bird has its place in a moving figure (a sheet that turns and thins out like starlings, a funnel, a figure eight) and chases it on its own spring, stiffer or looser: that is why the flock stretches, folds and opens again. No bird-to-bird maths, so even a thousand birds stay smooth.

  • Coming home

Called back, the birds return in a diagonal wave: they fly towards their home, on the last stretch a spring with no bounce sets them exactly on their module, and the white landing sheet of the code springs back before the sky closes.
