The cross-stitched QR

NewZIPPNGFree17 October 2026

Tap the code and it turns into Aida cloth from the point you touched: a wooden hoop springs down and fourteen threaded needles cross-stitch it row by row. Tap again and the thread is yanked out, the hoop lifts and the flat code to scan comes back.

The flat code always scans: it is a standard QR (error correction level M), tested with a phone camera. Before you print a thousand, scan it once.

What you can choose

Cloth
White, Ecru, Linen
Thread
Madder red, Prussian blue, Forest green, Black, Gold

How to use it

  • Type the address

Put the link to your site, a menu, a profile or just some text in the field and press Build. The code rearranges itself around the new address.

  • Watch it transform

Tap the code: it steps into its style, and you change it with the choices below. Tap it again and it lies flat, ready to scan.

  • Download the animation

The zip is the whole animation with your link and your colours: three files for your site, with the values to change at the top of the code, plus the PNG of the flat code (about 2000 pixels) for print. The zip needs a free account, the PNG alone does not.

How it’s made

  • One cross per module

Every dark module is a real cross: first all the forward strokes of the row, then the return ones, the way it is stitched by hand. The thread has two twisted strands, the sheen of stranded cotton and its shadow on the cloth.

  • The needles

The steel needles, with their eye and a shadow as far off as they are high, run along the rows and the thread follows them in a soft curve. The whole code is stitched in about three seconds.

  • Unpicked and restitched

Changing the address after stitching, the crosses that are no longer needed pop off and the needles restitch only the ones that change; a new thread recolours the stitches in a wave, a new cloth sweeps in as a circle from the centre.
